Cape Poetry Youth Movement

The Lingua Franca Spoken Word Movement presents:
Cape Poetry Youth Movement

Slam and spoken-word poetry are global phenomena, booming in the U.S. and Europe. Youth spoken-word is on the rise world-wide. So this year, the Lingua Franca Spoken Word Movement formed the Cape Poetry Youth Movement (CPYM), a programme aiming to foster youth voices to ensure that Cape Town retains and expresses its unique storytelling ways. We have an opportunity to cultivate Cape Town’s youth poets as some of the world’s leading spoken word artists. We will invest in them through intense and stimulating programming, including regular workshops, festivals, writing retreats, publications, mentorships, showcases, and much more.

Cape Town’s youth poets undoubtedly have the potential to be catalysts and drivers of social change; the transformative power of their spoken art challenges and provokes thought and speak against injustices that are too often silenced. They are more than capable of championing the critically acclaimed 2014 Brave New Voices Youth Poetry competition in the U.S. and representing African poetry on an international platform. These young writers merit our full investment. Without venues, resources, and your support, however, we cannot fulfill the full extent of this project. Be a part of a monumental moment in Cape Town’s poetic history by supporting today!
