WASHINGTON D.C. – SEPTEMBER 19 & 20, 2015 The first-ever “Censored Women’s Film Festival” is coming to Washington D.C. Films dealing with controversial topics such as honor-based violence, female genital mutilation (FGM), and child marriage are often cast aside in the name of political correctness. The Censored Women’s Film Festival changes that.
WHEN: November 19-20, 2015
WHERE: George Washington University
HOSTED BY: The Global Women’s Institute
“When women speak up, in some parts of the world, they get silenced and their films get censored,” said Paula Kweskin, writer/producer of the award-winning (and sometimes censored) documentary Honor Diaries. “On November 19-20 at George Washington University, women will be heard and our films will be seen.”
FILMS FEATURED:
- Academy Award nominated Persepolis, a coming-of-age story of an outspoken young Iranian girl during the Islamic Revolution
- The Cruel Cut, a film about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
- The Price of Honor, about two teenage sisters from Texas who were killed by their own family, in a so-called “honor killing”
- Honor Diaries, featuring women from Muslim-majority countries, speaking out against honor killings, child marriage, FGM and censorship
- India’s Daughter, a film banned in India about the gang rape of a young girl
A crowdfunding effort is underway to increase the size of this film festival, matching funds have been secured, thus doubling the impact of all donations at: http://www.causematch.com/BreakTheSilence
Paula Kweskin added, “As women, as filmmakers, we are standing up for free speech and women’s rights by screening our films, and making women’s voices heard, at the first-ever Censored Women’s Film Festival.”
