From Cloud to Multicloud

Tech research firm Gartner recently affirmed that 38% of IT spending by enterprises around the world relates to spending by departments other than the firms’ IT staff, and this will rise to 50% in 2017. In deciding how to spend these funds the non-IT departments will have to evaluate whether their firm’s own IT staff and infrastructure are sufficiently up to date and agile to perform the tasks required. The IT teams are up against a benchmark set by cloud service providers that have the latest hardware and software, as well as staff that are well-versed in both. Demand for cloud services is therefore acting on two fronts: opportunity for the established cloud service providers and commercial data center operators; as well as pressure for enterprise IT teams to upgrade their internal data center infrastructure with technology that allows them to emulate the cloud service providers. Enterprises will therefore end up managing a complex mix of cloud resources, especially as the outsourced service providers themselves are using a mix of public and private resources.
