Piels Beer

Founded in 1883 in Brooklyn, NY, Piels beer is a true New York original lager. Fans of Piels may remember the animated fictitious owners of the brewery, Bert and Harry Piel, with the voices of the legendary comedy duo Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding. After 90 years of operation, the East New York brewery closed its doors in September 1973 along with many of its contemporaries. Control of the brand was passed around from one large brewing company to another over the next several decades. During this time the integrity of the beer and comradely of the brand continued to decrease. In 2015 my family acquire 100% control of what was left of the company. We have rejuvenated what was left of the recipe paying homage to the beers German roots and reinvigorated the desirable taste characteristics of the original lager. Piels will be brewed in New York again!

Who We Are

We are all direct descendants of Thomas P. Hawkes, former president of Piel Bros. Most of us grew up in the shadow of Piels, the beer was a staple of all family functions. We are dedicated to bringing Piels back with integrity.
